I posted a journal about posting my cake art, but I'm actually going to do it know!

What are some tips you have for sketching proportionately? As I have said on many occasions, I am an amateur artist, and many of my scraps are FILLED with disproportionate drawings...
My stepmom suggested drawing the body first (I usually start with the head); the thing is, it only occurs when I draw full figures (trying to fill an 8.5 x 11 page).
Any suggestions?
